Data and fact sources

Where everything in the game comes from, and where we deliberately depart from our sources.

Countries and capitals

194 independent states, their English names, capitals, parts of the world, area, borders, languages, currencies, domains and calling codes come from the world-countries dataset, available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0.

Ukrainian names of countries and capitals are our own editing. The capital in the game is the official (constitutional) one; where the government or parliament sits elsewhere, the country card says so in a note.

Flags

The flag-icons set (Lipis and contributors), MIT license. Flags are shown at 4:3, exactly as drawn in the set, without cropping.

Map

Country outlines come from Natural Earth (public domain) via the world-atlas package.

Natural Earth shows “de facto control” and assigns Crimea to russia. We correct this at build time: Crimea is Ukraine. No UN member state has recognised the 2014 annexation, and UN General Assembly resolution 68/262 declared it invalid.

Disputed territories are not marked as anyone’s neighbours: a learning app shouldn’t quietly take a side where people expect reference information.

Descriptions and facts

Country descriptions and facts about countries and capitals were written with the help of the Claude language model (Anthropic) and are being reviewed by hand. Some countries are already checked; the rest are in progress.

The russia profile is editorial: it describes the invasion of Ukraine with references to UN General Assembly resolutions 68/262 and ES-11/1 and the International Criminal Court warrant. The game has no facts about Moscow.
